Ram is a Progressive Advocate for all working families.
Ram Villivalam has fought his entire life for what his parents instilled in him since the beginning: everyone should have a fair chance to make the American dream a reality.
A Chicago native, Ram was raised on the Northwest side and attended Chicago Public Schools throughout his childhood. He graduated from Lincoln Park High School’s IB Program and continued his schooling at George Washington University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.
As a child of immigrants, Ram recognizes that his aspirations are attainable because his parents who came to the U.S. dreamed of a better life. They left their family and professional careers in India to come to America in the 1970s with next to nothing in their pockets. They worked minimum wage jobs, went to school again, and were both public servants for more than 25 years. Ram’s parents provided a better quality of life and opportunity for their three children by believing in and living the American Dream. Ram has carried on the values his parents taught him of working hard and helping others.
Ram currently works as a consultant for SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana (formerly as a Legislative Coordinator). He advocates on behalf of more than 90,000 Home Care Providers, Child Care Providers, Nursing Home Workers, Hospital Workers, and the people they provide care for. Ram works tirelessly to increase their wages, improve their working conditions, and protect funding for the vital programs in which they work.
Ram previously served as the Outreach Director for U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider. He connected with manufacturing organizations, unions, immigration groups, and community colleges on more than 20 policy areas. Additionally, Ram designed and implemented the “Brad at your Business” initiative as a way to understand the challenges of small businesses across industries and facilitate worthwhile connections to local, state, and federal resources.
Ram proudly serves on the Board of the Gun Violence Prevention PAC and as President of the Indo-American Democratic Organization.
Ram and his wife, Elizabeth, live in the Mayfair neighborhood on the Northwest side of Chicago.
